Baker's Inn Flavourful Beef Stew

This beef stew is full of flavour and perfect for the family. Here in Zimbabwe, we have beef stews at just about any event and for dinner. Have you ever tried using breadcrumbs as your thickener and not soup powders? For a different taste and texture, you have to give this recipe a go with your Baker’s Inn homemade breadcrumbs. You will definitely love it!

Ingredients

  • 1 kg beef 
  • 4 tbsp Baker’s Inn breadcrumbs made with Baker’s Inn Brown bread
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 large tomatoes, grated
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Enough water to just cover the meat
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 2 medium carrots, chopped
  • Handful green beans, chopped
  • 4 tbsp oil

Method

1.    Get your ingredients together. Place breadcrumbs in a plate (see breadcrumbs recipes: here ) and add salt. Give a quick mix and set aside.
2.    Cut the beef into medium sized pieces. Coat each piece with the breadcrumbs. 
3.    Heat oil in pan. Fry the meat in batches until browned. Remove from pot and set aside.
4.    In the same pot, add the onion and fry for 2 minutes. Return the beef to the pot. Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, garlic and water. 
5.    Close pot and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to a gentle simmer until beef is tender and cooked through.
6.    Add the carrots and green beans. Simmer for 2 minutes. Taste for seasoning and adjust accordingly. Enjoy!
